Graduate case study: MARSHAL PAPWORTH SCHOLARSHIP HAS POSITIVELY IMPROVED MY COMMUNITY AND COUNTRY

“I was humbled to receive the Marshal Papworth Scholarship. Your investment in my education has not only improved my life and that of my community but also those across the country.

“As a little boy, I watched my mum struggle to improve our nutrition through subsistence small scale farming, just like all the other families around us. These small farms often lost fertility and eventually
their productivity went down leaving many extended families to struggle to get enough food.

“The Marshal Paworth Fund funded a scholarship for my MSc in Conservation and Land Management from Bangor University, and equipped me with the much-needed skills in soil conservation and management, through which I have successfully trained over 300 households within my community and 500 on different projects across Uganda.

“Through my Community-based Organisation (Tropical Ecosystems and Land Management Organisation), we have educated communities in basic soil management, conservation, pest control and management, and organic farming including basic soil testing techniques.

“I am employed as an Environment Consultant for the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA), where I have been able to help several families restore their agricultural land to full productivity scale through radio and field trainings.

“After areas have been used for UNRA projects, I am tasked to oversee the restoration of such areas through the application of manure, soil conservation technologies and soil testing, before being handed over
to the landowner.

“This has tremendously improved the nutrition of families in the communities especially during these hard times created by the COVID-19 pandemic. The generosity and support of the Marshal Papworth Fund has brought a big difference to the people of the Lucia, Bunambutye and Nakaloke communities in Uganda towards poverty alleviation and food security.”
